Richie Ashburn had 3 base hits and scored 3 times as the Philadelphia Phillies
pulled out a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 4 to 3 at Connie
Mack Stadium.
 
Philadelphia won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning.  After
an out was recorded, Ashburn doubled.  One out later, Eddie Waitkus came to
the plate and ripped a base-knock making Philadelphia the victor and
beginning a joyous home town celebration.  Philadelphia had 11 hits overall,
while Pittsburgh had 7.  
 
The win was credited to Jim Konstanty(3-3) who went 1 inning allowing no runs.
The losing pitcher was Bill Macdonald(1-4).  He was hit hard and gave up 11

loss.
