Roberts Slays Giants 4-1

Robin Roberts tossed a complete game at Connie Mack Stadium where the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Giants by the score of 4 to 1. In the 2nd inning Philadelphia scored 3 runs when they came up with 4 base hits. Granny Hamner led off and keyed the rally when he delivered a one-base hit. One out later, Mike Goliat was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim. Roberts then doubled. Richie Ashburn was up next and he was walked intentionally to load the bases. Eddie Waitkus stepped into the box and stroked a base-hit. Dick Sisler kept the inning going and lined a base-hit. The early run support proved sufficient for Roberts(11-11) and Philadelphia. That was all the run support Roberts required. Philadelphia banged out 9 hits on the afternoon. Sheldon Jones(8-11) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 9 hits and 6 walks in 8 innings.
