Phils Nip Bucs 3-2

19,817 fans were treated to a fine game at Forbes Field as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The sizzling Philadelphia Phillies won by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2. Philadelphia had 1 run cross the plate in the top of the 7th inning. After an out was recorded, Mike Goliat ripped a solo home run (his 8th of the season). Bob Miller struck out, unable to help the rally. Pittsburgh had 10 hits in the game while Philadelphia had 5, but Philadelphia had the more timely hits. The winning pitcher was Miller(6-6) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings. Miller was helped out by Jim Konstanty who recorded his 14th save. Bill Macdonald(4-8) was tagged with the loss. This win by Philadelphia continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten games, they have a record of 9-1. For the season, they are 48-41. Pittsburgh can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks.

Indians Power Past Senators 9-3

Al Rosen ripped a bases loaded blast and Bob Lemon went the distance at Griffith Stadium as the Cleveland Indians beat the Washington Senators by the count of 9 to 3. Cleveland brought 6 runs across the plate in the top of the 6th inning when they had 5 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Rosen who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 25th of the season). Cleveland managed 14 hits in their victory. The winning pitcher was Lemon(11-10) who allowed 3 runs for the game. The loss was charged to Bob Kuzava(5-8). He was touched for 4 homeruns in his 5 and 1/3 innings of work. With this win, Cleveland has a league leading 61-29 record. They have been 7-3 lately. With the loss Washington now has a record of 34-52.

Indians nip Senators 9-8

Larry Doby had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Griffith Stadium as the Cleveland Indians beat the Washington Senators by the count of 9 to 8. Washington was unable to claim the lead after Cleveland went ahead in the 5th inning plating an isolated run using 2 hits. Overall Cleveland out-hit Washington 14 to 11. The victory went to Mike Garcia(9-5) who went 7 and 1/3 innings, allowing 6 runs. Sam Zoldak earned his 3rd save. The losing pitcher was Connie Marrero(3-10). He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. 'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his best stuff,' Lou Boudreau said after the game. 'Garcia did not have command of his pitches most of the night, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!'

Doby and Clark Slug A's 13-3

Steve Gromek allowed Lou Boudreau to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game and center fielder Larry Doby had 4 hits and 4 RBI at Shibe Park as the indomitable Cleveland Indians embarrassed the Philadelphia Athletics by the lopsided score of 13 to 3. The Philadelphia fans didn't appreciate the big day Doby had. He laced a base-hit bringing in a run in the 4th inning, doubled in the 5th inning, rifled a three-run blast (his 8th of the season) in the 7th inning and slapped a single in the 9th inning. Cleveland rapped out 13 hits for the night. The victory was credited to Gromek(4-3) who went the distance, allowing 3 runs. Alex Kellner(3-12) took the loss. He couldn't find the strike zone and allowed 8 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.
