Phils Beat Cards 5-4

One run was the difference at Connie Mack Stadium as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 5 to 4. Philadelphia brought 2 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning. The key offensive moment was provided by Stan Hollmig who made the Philadelphia fans a happy lot when he stroked a one-base hit plating two runs. St. Louis had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Russ Meyer(7-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 3 runs. Jim Konstanty earned his 18th save. The losing pitcher was Gerry Staley(6-8). He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 8 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings. Despite losing Eddie Dyer was optimistic after the game. 'We'll get over this one. Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't. Any one of a dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.'
