Phils Win 2 in a Row, Destroy Cubs 18-2

Granny Hamner had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Chicago Cubs were badly beaten by the Philadelphia Phillies, 18 to 2. Hamner had a big day at the plate. He banged out a single in the 1st inning, tripled bringing in two baserunners in the 3rd inning, laced a one-base hit resulting in a run in the 4th inning and ripped a base-knock in the 6th inning. Philadelphia bats were very productive in the 3rd inning when they had 5 runs on 5 hits and the 4th inning when they had 5 runs on 5 hits. Philadelphia had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings. Russ Meyer(2-3) allowed 2 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. Walt Dubiel(2-2) suffered the loss. He was unable to control the Philadelphia offense and allowed 7 hits and 4 walks in 2 innings.

Phils Beat Cubs 9-4

In a lop-sided win the Philadelphia Phillies ripped the Chicago Cubs by a 9 to 4 count. Philadelphia took the lead off John Klippstein in the first inning scoring 3 runs using 3 hits. Richie Ashburn started the inning off right when he doubled. Granny Hamner stepped up next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. After another out, Del Ennis came up and he lined a base-hit knocking in a run. Willie Jones came up and he drew a walk. Bill Nicholson came to the plate and doubled as another two runners scored. Philadelphia finished with 9 hits in the victory. The win went to Curt Simmons(5-3) who allowed 4 runs in 7 innings. Klippstein(1-3) was given the loss. He gave up 9 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings of work.

Phils Top Bucs 6-1

Robin Roberts came through with a solid 9 innings as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 6 to 1 at Connie Mack Stadium. Philadelphia took the lead for good in the bottom of the 6th inning as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits. Philadelphia finished with 10 hits in the victory. Roberts(4-7) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. Bill Macdonald(2-7) absorbed the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings. 'I've been working on a few things in my delivery, and I think I'm hitting a good groove.' Roberts said after the game. 'I'm ready to start another game tomorrow!'

Dodgers Whip Cards 8-0

Preacher Roe carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning and shortstop Pee Wee Reese jacked one out of the ballyard and had 3 RBI at Ebbets Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8 to 0. Roe(9-2) was virtually untouchable. He allowed just 2 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 2.46. The left-handed Roe lost his chance for a no-hitter when Red Schoendienst singled with nobody out in the 7th inning. Brooklyn had 14 hits for the night. George Munger(6-3) absorbed the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 7 innings of work.

Tribe Power Past Boston 6-2

Mike Garcia reeled off a total of 11 strikeouts as the Cleveland Indians beat the Boston Red Sox by a score of 6 to 2. Garcia(6-4) pitched a solid game. He went 9 innings surrendering 6 hits and 10 walks reducing his ERA from 4.28 to 4.03. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning. Ellis Kinder(7-4) was tagged with the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. Joe McCarthy was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'

[Game 2] Tribe Sweep DH from A's

Mickey Vernon had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Shibe Park as the Cleveland Indians beat the Philadelphia Athletics in 11 innings 9 to 5. The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Cleveland won it in the 11th inning. The highlight belonged to Vernon who quieted the home crowd when he doubled which was good for two runs. Cleveland had 13 hits for the game and Philadelphia had 10. Sam Zoldak(1-2) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. Hank Wyse(4-4) was charged with the loss in relief. He was not very effective, surrendering 4 runs in 3 innings.
