grand slam home run in the 1st inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park
(his 5th of the season) in the 4th inning and doubled scoring two baserunners
in the 7th inning. Cincinnati scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky
pitching kept them from victory.

Russ Meyer(6-5) picked up the victory, allowing 6 runs in 8 innings. Ewell
Blackwell(7-8) was tagged with the loss. 'I had a big day, but there's a lot
of credit to go around' Hamner said. 'We played well together as a team.'

Phillies Sweep Reds on the Road

Granny Hamner blasted 2 homeruns as the Philadelphia Phillies outscored the Cincinnati Reds 14 to 6. Hamner propelled Philadelphia to victory. He launched a Grand Slam homerun in the 1st inning, hit a bases-empty home run (his 5th of the season) in the 4th inning and doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 7th inning. Cincinnati was not lacking for run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames. The win was credited to Russ Meyer(6-5) who went 8 innings allowing 6 runs. Ewell Blackwell(7-8) suffered the loss. 'Some days it just all comes together, and this was one of them' Hamner said. 'I've been seeing the ball pretty well lately.'

Tribe Sink Red Sox in 9th 3-2

Second baseman Joe Gordon had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Cleveland Indians rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Boston Red Sox, 3 to 2. Cleveland came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 3 hits. Bobby Avila opened up the inning nicely when he drew a walk. Bob Kennedy stepped into the batter's box and he smacked a single. After an out was recorded, Lou Boudreau stepped in and he doubled. Ray Boone was up next and he was walked intentionally. Gordon came to the plate and laced a base-hit. Al Benton, after tossing a perfect ninth, was credited with his 3rd save. Sam Zoldak(6-2) got the win allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Mel Parnell(13-3) ended up with the loss. Boudreau was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office after the game, 'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence. Weird. but GREAT!'

Wynn Shuts Down White Sox 1-0

Early Wynn shut down the Chicago batters on just 3 hits at Municipal Stadium where the powerful Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox by the score of 1 to 0. Wynn(13-2) was tremendous on the mound for Cleveland. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.05 to 2.83. Cleveland had only 4 hits for the afternoon. Ray Scarborough(3-9) was given the loss. He surrendered just 4 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings. 'Wynn gave us exactly what we needed tonight,' Lou Boudreau said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw it for strikes. They were really fooled by his change. Most of the time he had them chasing it.'

Indians Beat Browns 3-2

3,724 fans watched an exciting game at Sportsman's Park. The Cleveland Indians topped the St. Louis Browns by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2. Cleveland came up with all the runs they needed in the 3rd inning when they scored 3 runs on 2 hits. That was all the runs Steve Gromek(3-2) needed. St. Louis threatened in the 9th but Cleveland was able to put down the rally. Jesse Flores recorded his 3rd save. Duane Pillette(1-1) was the losing pitcher. Lou Boudreau was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'
