| Second baseman Joe Gordon had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Cleveland Indians rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Boston Red Sox, 3 to 2. Cleveland came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 3 hits. Bobby Avila opened up the inning nicely when he drew a walk. Bob Kennedy stepped into the batter's box and he smacked a single. After an out was recorded, Lou Boudreau stepped in and he doubled. Ray Boone was up next and he was walked intentionally. Gordon came to the plate and laced a base-hit. Al Benton, after tossing a perfect ninth, was credited with his 3rd save. Sam Zoldak(6-2) got the win allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Mel Parnell(13-3) ended up with the loss. Boudreau was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office after the game, 'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence. Weird. but GREAT!' |
