Right fielder Enos Slaughter had 4 hits and 6 RBI at Sportsman's Park as the
St. Louis Cardinals beat the Boston Braves 12 to 7.
 
Slaughter had a big day at the plate.  He smacked a single in the 1st inning,
tripled scoring two baserunners in the 2nd inning, laced a base-knock
bringing in two baserunners in the 4th inning and stroked a base-hit which
plated a run in the 7th inning.  St. Louis won despite being out-hit by
Boston 17 hits to 13.  
 
The winning pitcher was Al Brazle(2-6) who allowed 6 runs in 7 and 1/3
innings. The losing pitcher was Bob Chipman(4-1).  He was a hard-luck loser
as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 and 2/3 innings of work.

Catcher Roy Campanella blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI at Forbes Field as the
Brooklyn Dodgers came back dramatically to top the Pittsburgh Pirates by the
score of 9 to 7.
 
Brooklyn had the game winning rally in the 9th inning when they scored 4 runs
on 4 hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Jim Russell who quieted the
crowd when he delivered a one-base hit bringing in two baserunners.  Dan
Bankhead(2-8) got help from Joe Hatten who pitched great and earned his 1st
save.  
 
Vic Lombardi(1-4) was the loser in relief.  Burt Shotton was very happy after
the game, 'It's great to come back and win it in your last at bats! Our guys
just wouldn't give up.  And did you see the fans - one minute they're
laughing and screaming down all sorts of unprintable stuff at our guys - the
next minute - SILENCE! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win this afternoon!'
 
NEW YORK AT CHICAGO

Larry Jansen blanked Chicago in a very well-pitched complete game and second
baseman Eddie Stanky slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI as the New York Giants
defeated the Chicago Cubs by the score of 3 to 0 at Wrigley
Field.
 
Jansen(13-4) contributed a very nicely pitched game.  He allowed only 4 hits
and 3 walks in 9 innings.  New York rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon.
 
Paul Minner(3-6) absorbed the loss.  He pitched 8 innings giving up 10 hits
and 4 walks.
 
NEW YORK AT CHICAGO

Monte Irvin went yard and had 3 RBI and Sheldon Jones pitched a complete game
at Wrigley Field where the New York Giants beat the Chicago Cubs by the score
of 11 to 4.
 
New York jumped on top to stay in the top of the 5th inning scoring 2 runs
utilizing 2 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Don Mueller began the
rally when he delivered a single.  After another out, A balk was stepped in
and he called.  Wes Westrum then bombed a two-run dinger (his 15th of the
season).  Irvin followed and he drew a walk.  New York managed 12 hits in
their victory.  
 
The win went to Jones(6-9) who allowed 4 runs in the game. Johnny Schmitz(6-8)
was charged with the loss.  He allowed New York 8 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings
of work.  
 
 
PHILADELPHIA AT CINCINNATI

Del Ennis hit one over the fence at Crosley Field as the Philadelphia Phillies
beat the Cincinnati Reds by the count of 3 to 1.
 
Philadelphia set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring a single run
on 2 hits.  Although they lost, Cincinnati did out-hit Philadelphia 11 to 8.
 
Curt Simmons(10-3) was the winner allowing no runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Jim
Konstanty earned his 13th save.  Ken Raffensberger(7-12) ended up with the
loss.  He gave up 8 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings.  
 
 
PHILADELPHIA AT CINCINNATI

Granny Hamner smacked 2 homeruns as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the
Cincinnati Reds by a score of 14 to 6 at Crosley Field.
 
Hamner was in a groove all day.  The Cincinnati fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box.  He depressed the partisan hometown fans with a
grand slam home run in the 1st inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park
(his 5th of the season) in the 4th inning and doubled scoring two baserunners
in the 7th inning.  Cincinnati scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky
pitching kept them from victory.  
 
Russ Meyer(6-5) picked up the victory, allowing 6 runs in 8 innings. Ewell
Blackwell(7-8) was tagged with the loss.  'I had a big day, but there's a lot
of credit to go around' Hamner said.  'We played well together as a team.'
